January Recap

Well our first Book Club meet-up was a success! We had seven people discussing the classic The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger as well as the future endeavors of Book Club.

One suggestion was for Book Club to give back to the community by selecting a literacy, library, or book based organization each month to collect books (or monetary donations to buy books) for the selected organization.

Suggested organizations include:

  • Half Price Books Half Pint Libraries which were created to “give children and their families the chance to read and share books while staying in hospitals, pediatric clinics, special needs schools and community centers. Children are encouraged to read to take their minds off of treatment or being otherwise confined to unpleasant settings, and to promote childhood literacy skills.”
  • Vineyard’s Aunt Mary’s Prison Outreach which takes children’s books to prisons and records the mothers reading them.  Then the church sends the book and the recording to the child.
  • Operation Paperback sends paperback novels to soldiers overseas.

Information about these projects will be forthcoming!

last-lectureLastly, the next two books have been decided! February’s pick is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. We will be meeting at the Crosswoods Panera in Worthington.

Our March selection will be The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. The location for March has yet to be determined. It will likely be at someone’s house so we can watch the movie version of The Secret Life of Bees!

As always if you have any questions, concerns, or comments feel free to send an email to columbusbookclub @ gmail . com (no spaces)!

Hope to see you all next month!

Happy Reading!
